Periodontics - Periodontal Microsurgery - Dental Implantology
If you've been referred to us, or are looking for a periodontist, be assured every member of my team and I are dedicated to providing the finest care you can receive. Our office is warm, friendly, and each of us strive to create a positive experience for every patient. I've devoted my career to providing my patients conservative, predictable, cutting-edge treatment that comfortably restores health, function and form. Folks who have a localized problem or generalized issues throughout their mouth receive the same attention to detail and precision in their care. I feel one of the most important services I provide is development of treatment plans tailored specifically for each individual--taking into account one's expectations, needs, age, pocketbook, life experiences and time available for care.
Some of the treatment we provide includes LANAP (Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure), Dermal matrix grafting, connective tissue grafting, the Chao Pinhole Surgical technique, non-surgical therapy, the use of growth factors, Platelet-Rich Fibrin and guided tissue regeneration for rebuilding lost tissues in order to improve your appearance and allow ideal dental implant placement. I have extensive experience in placement of dental implants including esthetically demanding situations (for instance--replacing upper front teeth!) I also have nearly 20 years' experience in microsurgical "periodontal plastic surgical" procedures which can enhance your health and appearance. In fact, I was one of the first periodontists in this country to perform these procedures using an operating microscope (one of the first four in California). This microsurgical background has provided a solid foundation of skills for many other procedures, particularly in creating bone and soft tissue support, including sinus augmentation, for dental implants, previously diseased natural teeth, and areas helping to support bridges and partials. Through the course of my residencies (at the West Los Angeles Veteran's Administration Hospital and UCLA School of Dentistry) I received superb training in diagnosis and treatment of oral pathology. I work closely with the oral pathology faculty at the University of California at San Francisco, my alma mater, in situations involving soft and hard tissue changes in the mouth.
While you're in our office, look around. Jeff Nixon, a local photographer who worked with Ansel Adams for many years in Yosemite and here on the central coast, provided a beautiful gallery of his work for our patients to enjoy.
We're in the process of also including several of my own photographs on our walls--no they're not of teeth!!--of the American West.
We believe that our patients' comfort—and their involvement in choosing treatment that is appropriate and in keeping with their “comfort level”—is critical. Our mission is to treat every patient as if they were family members or friends, and select treatment options we ourselves would have.
We work closely as a team with your referring dentist. However, if you don't have a dentist, you are welcome in our office -- for evaluation of any concern, for a great cleaning, a "second opinion", for a specific procedure. More and more over the years, our patients, and friends of patients, refer patients to us. We love that!!
I am extraordinarily proud of my team, truly the finest staff I have had the pleasure of working with in my career-- composed of caring and dedicated professionals:
Lyndal, our office manager, has devoted her career to dentistry. She has degrees in dental assisting and dental radiology (so is familiar with every aspect of the "back" office) and has worked in administrative & managerial roles in dental offices for over 20 years. She is sharp, professional, amazing at multitasking, and is also one of the kindest and most caring individuals I have encountered in any dental front office. Lyndal reviews treatment plans with our patients and schedules care, handles insurance billing along with Kim, our office administrator, and also oversees multiple details involved in coordinating complex treatment between your dentist and our office.
Kim, our office administrator, also brings with her extensive experience in dentistry, also starting with dental assisting. Kim has worked in dental specialty offices throughout her career, and while periodontics means learning new things, she has applied her skills both effectively and efficiently in facilitating every aspect of our business needs. Kim works closely with Lyndal in appointment scheduling, billing, inter-office communication, and with other staff members in assuring every detail receives attention. She is fun, adores working with people and somehow makes even the busiest days a kick for all of us.
Debbie and Stacy, our hygienists, have been working in the periodontal field throughout their careers (Stacy was previously my surgical assistant: Debbie has worked exclusively for me since she completed her hygiene training) both Deb and Stace regularly receive training in advanced root instrumentation and soft tissue management, and are highly skilled at providing expert care remarkably comfortably. Both ladies are graduates of the Cabrillo College Dental Hygiene Program, where I've been on faculty as a clinical instructor since 1995--that is, they were my students before starting in our practice!
Kellye, our surgical assistant, has trained with me since shortly after completing her assisting training at Monterey Peninsula College. Kellye's skills, professional and kind demeanor make for a gentle, totally comfortable experience, every time you are in our office. She is fun, thoughtful, highly skilled and an absolute pleasure to work with.
Stephanie takes care of a multitude of "behind the scenes" office activities. She has recently completed training at Monterey Peninsula College in Dental Assisting and Dental Radiology, and divides her time working with Kellye and me, Debbie and Stacy, as well as helping Lyndal and Kim. Stephanie is in charge of all of our correspondence with other offices--this is a huge task and vital to coordinating care. She is also assisting on more and more procedures with me, working with Kellye. Spephanie is also assisting in photography and video recording of microsurgical procedures for my teaching activities, and in communication with our patients through electronic media.

What is a Dental Implant? And What is this LASER stuff about?
A dental implant is a small titanium screw or post, usually about the same size as a tooth root, that serves as the replacemet for the root portion of a missing tooth. Dental implants are stable and comfortable. No adjustment is needed after placement. Normally it will serve its owner for life. Anyone who is missing one or more teeth due to injury, disease, or tooth decay, may be a candidate for dental implants. Learn more about Implants!
Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP) is a revolutionary method of treating periodontal disease, that in most cases is less expensive, faster, far more comfortable and as effective as traditional periodontal therapy. Click on this link for a brief summary:
